One of the newest approaches to getting a cardio workout involves taking lessons at a
kickboxing gym. This discipline has
its roots in Asia, and was first practiced over 2,000 years ago. You can go to any number of
kickboxing gyms across the country and learn the fundamentals. Still, the sport didn't make
its way to American shores until the 1970s. It was at this time that American karate experts
began arranging competitions that allowed the full-contact kicks and punches that were banned
in karate, and modern kickboxing was born.

Many gyms offer cardio kickboxing lessons. These
classes run the gamut. Some are aimed at beginners, others at experts; there are even classes
geared toward females, to take advantage of the growing number of females with an interest
in this form of exercise.
Finding a class that offers a talented instructor is important. Remember, your instructor
serves as your direct conduit to these exercises, and you'll want to make sure that you are
receiving lessons from someone with the knowledge and experience to present you with sound
techniques. Ideally, you'll want to find a teacher who has earned both a high-level belt in
martial arts and certification as a fitness instructor by an organization such as the
American Council on Exercise (ACE).
